STAR in the field of Black and Gold

Like the small stars in the twinkling expanse of the heavens, I am referring to STAR's position in the Field of Vanderbilt University's colors Gold and Black. Our independent 501 C3 status and size have us as a small contributor of activities to this prestigious educational institution. Through support of Chancellor Emeritus Alexander Heard (and his wife Dean), Former Provost Thomas Burish, Paul Gherman, Director of the Jean and Alexander Heard Library, and Marice Wolfe from Special Collections; STAR has been invited to add its documentation to director Dan Prince's papers currently being catalogued. The working relationship being set up would have Vanderbilt holding a unique collection of materials about self taught artists that will expand from the visual to music and performing arts. It is recognized that the spirit of self taught artists is captured by their artifacts, art and work--but also can be investigated for personal motivation, individual sense of discovery and innate creativity. These qualities should be viewed in a scholarly manner, but we also envision broadening bases of attention in the writing/art world and public. All will be welcome to use the materials in Special Collections in 1999. Expansion has Vanderbilt tapping other institution resources, while STAR continues its work in the field.
